The Tiji Festival Helicopter Tour exists for one reason: time. Not everyone has 18 days available. Not everyone is physically prepared for 6–7 hours of daily walking at altitude. The helicopter option bridges that gap – in seven days, you fly into Lo Manthang, attend all three days of the festival, spend a day exploring the ancient city, and fly back to Kathmandu.
The Pokhara-to-Lo Manthang helicopter flight takes approximately 45–50 minutes, flying over the Kali Gandaki gorge and crossing the Mustang plateau at altitude. On a clear day the views are extraordinary. Altitude acclimatization is handled differently on the helicopter tour – you're ascending from around 800m (Pokhara) to 3,840m (Lo Manthang) in under an hour, so the itinerary builds in a rest day in Lo Manthang before the festival begins and the first two days are deliberately low-exertion. Your guide monitors for AMS symptoms. See our acclimatization guide for what to watch for.
Day 1 – Kathmandu: Arrival, permit processing, briefing, hotel.
Day 2 – Kathmandu to Pokhara to Lo Manthang: Drive or fly Kathmandu–Pokhara, then helicopter to Lo Manthang. Rest afternoon for acclimatization.
Day 3 – Lo Manthang rest & exploration: Light walking in the city, monastery visits at Thubchen and Jhampa Gompa. Rest to acclimatize before the festival.
Day 4 – Tiji Festival Day 1: Thangka unveiling, afternoon Tsacham dance in palace courtyard.
Day 5 – Tiji Festival Day 2: Second thangka, faster dances, effigy ritual – the dramatic climax of Tiji.
Day 6 – Tiji Festival Day 3: Closing ceremony, community procession, Tsampa offering on the palace roof.
Day 7 – Return: Helicopter Lo Manthang to Pokhara, return to Kathmandu.
The helicopter tour includes: helicopter flights (Kathmandu–Pokhara–Lo Manthang–Pokhara–Kathmandu), Upper Mustang restricted area permit (USD 500), ACAP and TIMS permits, hotel and guesthouse accommodation, meals in Lo Manthang, a government-licensed English-speaking guide, and airport/helipad transfers.
Not included: international flights, personal travel insurance (mandatory – must cover helicopter evacuation), tips for guides and ground staff, alcohol, personal shopping, or costs from weather-related delays (helicopter tours are subject to weather cancellation). See our permit guide for the full permit cost breakdown.
The helicopter option makes most sense for: travelers with limited time (a week vs. three weeks), older or less physically active travelers who want to attend Tiji without the trekking commitment, professionals fitting a significant trip into a short window, and travelers combining Nepal with other destinations who want to maximize their Mustang time.
If you have 18 days and reasonable fitness, the trekking route gives you infinitely more: the landscape, the villages, the cultural encounters along the way, and the physical journey that makes arriving in Lo Manthang feel earned. The helicopter is fast; the trek is complete. Helicopter availability during festival season is extremely limited. Contact us at info@tijifestivaltrek.com to confirm 2027 availability – seats are taken months in advance.
